About the play

“When I cast my mind back to that summer of 1936, different kinds of memories offer themselves to me…”

Michael Mundy invites us to join him and meet his family at the time when he was seven years old. He takes us on a journey to his home in Ballybeg, county Donegal, in rural Ireland.

We are introduced to his mother, a single parent, her brother, a former missionary in Africa, and her four unmarried sisters. They all educate Michael in their own way. In spite of poverty the family manages to lead a sheltered happy life. They care for each other and find pleasure in such simple things as their new radio set and the prospect of a harvest dance.

But the changes in society also affect their lives. We are made aware that things will change soon …
