SS 09: Pride & Prejudice
About the Play

”It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” – What a delightful truth for the less fortunate Bennet family! With five unmarried daughters, all in want of a husband, single men of wealth are always welcome but hard to come by. The arrival of young and handsome Mr Bingley and his friend Mr Darcy therefore causes quite the hubbub in the neighbourhood. A curious chain of events is set in motion: Some awful truths are revealed, hearts are broken and mended, and – most importantly – marriage proposals are first rejected but finally accepted.

About the Author

Jane Austen is one of the most widely read British authors. Her works are considered as classical works of English literature and appreciated for their realism, social commentary and irony. They are seen as a part of the transition from novels of sensibility to 19th century realism. The author’s plots are set amongst the British upper and middle class and emphasize women’s dependence on marriage in order to secure social rank and economic security. Although Jane Austen’s works were only read by a small literary elite in the 19th century, by the 1940s she had become part of the literary canon of ‚great English writers‘ and her popularity has still increased since.
